I tried Proxmox but found it way overkill for home use. I run ~50 Docker containers and I love Docker for its ease of use. Proxmox is an order of magnitude more complicated.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you capture things quickly across devices in a self-hosted setup?English
2·19 days agoThis, in combination with ‘copyparty’ as a Docker container with a volume mapping to my files. Edit locally, and edit from anywhere.
I use a variety of laptops with their built-in keyboards, and sometimes with a variety of plain usb keyboards.
It’s easy to run an AHK script on each machine, just for me. It’s not feasible to carry a special keyboard around.
Among my primary uses is completely remapping the keyboard layout, from scan codes to international Colemak (like Dvorak but different).
That means my script captures every alpha keystroke and sends something else instead.
AHK is marvelous to run on otherwise locked-down corporate computers.
While I’m at it, my AHK also tracks typing stats, just for fun.
I wonder how hard it might be to build something like AHK for Linux.
I’m a big fan of AHK myself, and my small scripts would be a real gap when I finally manage to kick Windows out.

5·1 month agoWhat about 2FA, and banking apps, and banks’ payment apps? At least in Yurop they require a “safe” / “uncompromised” OS. Oh the irony! But that is why I am still unrooted.

I hate products with generic names. It makes it utterly impossible to search for.
Even if this OP post might explain it, it is still useless when taken out of context like in the esteemed comment above this one.
/rant, sorry, thank you.

3·2 months agoHah, yes that’s also how I remember my childhood. But I never was good at it, though I became a good software project manager instead which works well for me using Claude now. I count that as a win.

5·2 months agoHey friend, don’t undersell yourself. You do possess the intelligence, but maybe just not the skills.
This is perfectly valid! I to a lot of tinkering with selfhosting using Docker containers, and I have learned a ton from that. I feel a bit silly that I didn’t make the connection with firewalls - just tinkering for fun!
Same. What’s the deal with having elaborate firewall stuff for a normal family home anyway?
If the built in stuff isn’t good enough then 99.9% of households would be compromised a long time ago already.

I was probably exaggerating when I said 50.
I just counted the icons on my dash. 42.
