It would be absolutely hilarious if in the very long term Proton or other Win32 compatibility layers just become a generic set of libraries that most games rely on for historical reasons despite every reason for their existence no longer applying

I think at this point Mint is a brilliant option for mom or Dad’s laptop that’s still on Windows 10 and Microsoft deemed “too insecure” for Windows 11, but Bazzite and other newer Distros do so much better at being distros for gamers right out of the box that those are better to recommend to gamers

Linux@lemmy.ml•An upcoming California law requires operating system providers to enforce basic mandatory age verificationEnglish
2·1 month agoI mean, as the law is written there’s zero requirement for the entered age to be verified, only to associate an age bracket with the OS user account and to provide that info to programs as they require it. Now, I do wonder if a California-compliant OS would require service accounts to have an entered date of birth and what kind of fun that could potentially lead to of you enter the date of account creation as the birthdate but the full ramifications remain to be seen

2·1 month agoI mean this is generally a sign of growth by the content creator, shifting from whatever “personalized” ads the ad network decides to show, to having their own relationships with advertisers and doing their own ads. Honestly its a good thing because it means that the people making the content also have full control over who they sell ad space to and how that ad space is used, and if viable platforms other than Youtube existed, they would be able to to run their videos profitably without excessive user tracking

Linux@lemmy.ml•Where is Linux not working well in your daily usage? Share your pain points as of 2026, so we can respectfully discussEnglish
0·3 months agoI wonder if maybe it’s a governor problem. Laptops are often super power limited, sometimes even more so thermally limited, so they rely on increasingly bonkers power profiles to try to balance it, but pegging the laptop at 100% utilization such as while transcoding can still cause it to fall over. Have you played with adjusting the power profile at all?

I think the point they’re trying to make is that racism is a state of mind, and opening oneself up to being racist against a non-human or imaginary thing can open the floodgates to more “real” forms of racism against fellow humans.
Basically the difference between anthropomorphizing bots while one expresses their dislike for interacting with them vs. expressing one’s dislike of being forced to interact with a machine that is made to feel like interacting with a person but isn’t.
I’m not sure how I feel about this sentiment I’ve described, but it’s one I’m open to arguments on since as a white dude I come into it with a mountain of privilege that likely blinds my view of things
