Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you prefer bare bones software that you customize with plugins, or an all-in-one solution that does everything you need out of the box?English
5·5 days agoPlugins. But only if they come from the same software provider and are tested in the same way. Otherwise the support is crappy and I’d prefer the features bundled in.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Caddy reverse proxy fails with a login pageEnglish
1·8 days agoI don’t know how to answer your question. But it might be that your router doesn’t like being access as a url. I know I had to tell mine to accept login.router.net as itself.
I also just want to highlight:
The router and the host running Caddy, are different machines
This means your credentials are being passed in plain text over your network between caddy and the router. This might be OK to you. But wanted to highlight for anyone else reading.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Self-hosted voice assistant with mobile appEnglish
11·11 days agoIt’s gotten better. Which is to say, it’s almost feature compatible with the old assistant. But you can also give it context. So for example, if you say “remind me X”, you can get it to automatically remind you tomorrow with an alert at 9am, unless you specify a different time. And it’s ok if you screw up the phrasing a bit.
But DIY is infinitely better. If you have the resources.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Mini PC to replace fiber modem and wifi router. How to proceed?English
1·11 days agoI was having the same internal struggle. But I’ve landed on
iSP -> ISP router -> my new firewall -> home router
It’s way simpler that way and basically the same benefit.
Didn’t libreoffice reintroduce their server recently? I remember seeing an article but I can’t find the details.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you manage messages across multiple apps?English
5·16 days agoUnrelated to self hosting: jira or whatever ticketing system your company uses. They tend to have integrations into those other apps where you right click and create a ticket. Then the ticket list is my source of truth.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Docker container with a web UI to manage virtual machines?English
4·1 month agoIf you can never remember the command, and that’s the real issue, just put the command in a script and run the script. Name the script. Something easy like, home assistant restart.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•A sneaky demonstration of the dangers of curl bashEnglish
5·1 month agoIt’s really only about trusting the source. Your operating system surely has thousands of scripts that you’ve never read and never checked. And wouldn’t have time to. And people don’t complain about that.
But it’s really bad practice to run random things from random sites. So the practice of downloading a script and running it is frowned upon. Mostly as a way of maintaining good security hygiene.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Advice for setting up baremetal k8s labEnglish
1·2 months agoIn the real world, you’re more likely to see multiple vms on each server and each vm running a k8s node. So I’d go with that setup.
Once you have that going, play with clustering services within k8s: Kafka, redis, etcd, postgres.
Lots of good answers already. Just want to add.
Block IP from every country that doesn’t have your users in it. That will go a long way.
